False Memories - W4/D3

One of the most interesting concepts that I came across in chapter 3 is the idea of false memory. As I read the section, I thought about all the instances of possible false memories in my life. Often times I find myself trying to distinguish between my short term memories.. did this event occur in real life or did it occur in just a dream? I thought that the example story the reading gave was extremely intriguing. I have watched plenty of biographies and news stories that explain how those who are being interrogated for a crime will falsely confess to it because that circumstances under which they are in are so stressful. After reading on this concept, it makes me wonder if they were victims of false memory as well. I just find it so interesting that our minds can play tricks on us like this. And it makes me wonder how many of my childhood “memories” are just simple fabrications. Inception!

  1. This concept seems like a nightmare not being able to distinguish what memories are real. I can definitely see myself doing that since I already have a terrible memory. I think it is very likely and possible to do when you are trying to remember your childhood. Oh and nothing is worst than trying to figure out if an event happened or if it was just a dream or even from a movie. I think false memories can be a subconscious thing, like if you saw a movie a long time ago and liked the childhood maybe something from the movie might seep into your childhood memory.

  2. Hi WobbledyWa,
I really liked the concept that you are discussing and find it quite interesting as well. It is interesting to know how much of our memory really is false opposed to what is real. It seems that it could be hard to determine it at time too. For instance, if you try to explain a childhood memory to someone else and even if they don’t remember it, they could agree with you and that person just might think that they forgot it and you didn’t. When in turn it really is a false memory but since the other person agreed you will never know the truth. I often wonder why someone can’t remember something that happened that I do and now wonder if it has to do with my false memory. And there has also been times where I have remembered that happened, and then find myself question if it was in my dream or not. Our minds do play tricky games on us. The human mind is very power and can be misleading at times. I liked what you discussed.
