The first admirable speaker that came to my mind was Ellen Degeneres. Ellen encompasses amazing communication skills. Ellen is well liked, funny, relatable, and just an all around good-natured person. And probably one of her best characteristics is that she is down to earth. I believe that out of the three rhetorics, ethos is probably her strongest suit. Ellen could possibly build her ethos in terms of attractiveness, power, and credibility, by doing the following: In terms of power, Ellen most often plays up her good character and I think this is why so many people like her; because she has an amazing ethos. To strengthen her power I think she should work on better distributing her power through aristoles three rhetorics. She should put more effort into exposing and using her pathos and logos when she speaks. Through gaining credibility she will also be more trustworthy and credible to her audience thus affecting and strengthening her relationship with her audience; her audience with find her more attractive .And in terms of credibility, I believe that Ellen is doing wonderfully as it is. She remains to be a good person who avoids conflict and works hard.
WabbledyWa,
ReplyDeleteYou talk about Ellen Degeneres really got me thinking to why she is so influential to many people. Yeah she has great communication skills but what is the big picture? Three of the top talk shows ever is arguably Oprah, Ellen, and Howard Stern. What do all of these people have in common? Identification through attractiveness. It sounds a little funny because lets face it these three aren't supermodels of any sort. Howard Stern was quoted as saying that he has a face for radio... The fact of the matter is that the world isn't full of everyday run of the mill girl next door types or supermodels. Its full of diversity; minority women and men, gays and lesbians, and well for lack of a better analogy Howard Sterns.
Hey WobbledyWa,
ReplyDeleteI love how you chose to blog about Ellen Degeneres’ speaking skills. I couldn’t agree more with you. Anyone who is a talk show host needs to have those skills, but I too think there is something different about Ellen as a speaker. As you said, one of the most important things that she possesses is her ability to reach out to the audience and make them feel like they can relate to her. When people can agree and relate to a speaker, they automatically put their trust into them, which results in the speaker having the power to convince the audience. Great job!
