Interviewing

One concept that I think could use further discussion is the idea of interviewing as it is something that many of use will be delving into after graduation and when we finally enter the job market. In short, interviewing is a form of two-way communication have predetermined purpose in which participant ask and answer questions. Interviews are used to do such things as orient new employees and evaluate job performance. With that said, it is always important to prepare for an interview especially if it has occupational purposes. You want to have a clear understanding of all your work content skills, transferable skills and self-management skills. Not only that, but you want to be able to successfully rely these skills in an intelligible manner to your interviewer. To help with your interview, you also want to have a well structure resume and cover letter that directly addresses the needs of your employer.

Chapter 5: Nonverbal Communication

Out of all the chapters, I found chapter 5 to be the most interesting as it discussed nonverbal communication. I believe this was the most interesting to read as it gave me insight on how to better understand people. It is one thing to decode spoken messages and a completely other thing to be able to interact and decode others through their facial expression and actions among other things. As weird as it sounds, its almost like your able to read another mind if you are able to correctly interpret their physical actions. They may be saying one thing to your face, but saying a completely different thing with their hands or with their body proximity. I believe that this chapter has also made me a better communicator because I can now better communicate with others without words. I am more aware of my own nonverbal actions. In this chapter I also learned about emblems, illustrators and regulators among other things.

Deception Research

I found chapter 13 to be quite interesting as I have taken both Qualitative and Quantitative Research courses in my college career. With that said I am very much familiar with research methods. In terms of doing a research study on deception, my research question would be something along the lines of “How do college students ages 18-21 recognize when they are being lied to?” I made this research question very specific (college students 18-21) so that it would be easier to conduct my survey. For this research study I would most likely used mixed methods; and utilize both survey and performance research. The surveys would give me a general idea of what facial expressions or body movements others most commonly use to identify deception. I would then test my results by conducting those specific facial expressions or body movement in performance research. Those who I conduct my performance research on should have no idea about my study as their knowledge make affect my results.
